Not a whole lot happened on my first visit to York. There simply wasn't enough time to do everything I wanted to do. This
trip is part of the orientation for the University of Hull. The entire group of us new students took a coach to York and
spent the afternoon. That's all we had... one afternoon. Even so, we used our time well.
When the group reached York, Sharon Sullivan, Erik Nuss and I (the three CSC members studying abroad in Hull) decided
to stick together. The first thing on everyone's agenda was the Jorvik Viking Centre. This was an awesome look into York's
viking past. It was interesting to experience the recreation of what York would have looked, smelled and sounded like when
it was occupied by vikings.
After this and lunch, the three of us went to the Story of York. Here we saw a copy of the Doomsday Book and a coin commemorating
York's 1900th anniversary. All of these were just amazing to me. We then went to York Dungeon. It was a tour of the darker
side of York's past - the plague, torture and execution devices and methods. When we excaped from the dungeon, we went to
see Clifford's Tower. This is all that remains of York Castle. After this we were almost out of time, so we almost ran through
the Castle Museum - we were halfway done when we realized we had to get to the coach.
Unfortunately, we did not get to the York Minster, but that just gives me a good reason to go back to York. We shall
see. This was definitely a fitting introduction to England.
